In a groundbreaking initiative, Bournemouth is considering a 20mph speed limit for 139 of its roads, following Wales' successful implementation in 2023. The data speaks volumes: a 28% drop in injuries and 10 fewer deaths in the scheme's first year.
Green councillor Simon Bull, representing Winton East, believes it's a positive step, despite the initial adjustment period for motorists. "Most residents support the 20mph neighborhood," he says. "It enhances road safety and accommodates the reality of many roads with parked cars on both sides."
The formal consultation received a mixed response: 96 in favor, 105 against, and 8 general comments. When the plans were first proposed, the BCP and Dorset Motorists Group voiced opposition, citing a lack of trust in the council's traffic strategy.
Steve Moody, the group's chair, offers a nuanced perspective: "20mph zones are beneficial, especially near schools, and we'd support that. But we'd prefer a part-time implementation, not 24/7."
