Boxing fans, get ready for a potential shake-up! The highly anticipated clash between Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz seems to be hitting a major snag, and a former undisputed champion is ready to step in and steal the show. But who is this mystery challenger, and what's the real story behind the stalled negotiations? Let's dive in!
Before the calendar turns to 2026, the boxing world was buzzing with excitement for a showdown between the undefeated super-welterweight stars, Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz. It was a fight everyone wanted to see.
However, talks for this dream match have taken a turn for the worse. Both camps are reportedly threatening to look for other opponents if a deal isn't reached soon, despite their shared goal of a bout in April.
Adding fuel to the fire, Vergil Ortiz recently filed a lawsuit against his own promotional firm, Oscar De La Hoya's 'Golden Boy Promotions'. Ortiz believes his team isn't as eager for the Ennis fight as he is, potentially jeopardizing the clash.
And this is the part most people miss... De La Hoya has since doubled down, dismissing the idea of releasing Ortiz from his contract. He stated he was simply trying to secure a better financial deal for his fighter, openly demanding a '60/40 split' in Ortiz's favor for the fight against Ennis.
With the dispute ongoing, fans are starting to lose hope. But, in a surprising twist, former undisputed super-welterweight champion Jermell Charlo has thrown his hat in the ring, offering to face either Ennis or Ortiz. Charlo took to social media, making his intentions clear.
"Boxing is not a team sport. So, the next move is always the best move. Idk wtf they are fussing about but I’ve always heard you doing something right when the other team start to feud. 154 is the most overlooked division. I’ll fix the problem, send me contact ODH [Oscar De La Hoya] or Eddie [Hearn],” Charlo stated.
Charlo hasn't fought since his unsuccessful challenge for Canelo Alvarez's undisputed super-middleweight title back in September 2023. He's now eyeing a return to action in 2026, either at 154lbs or 160lbs.
Here's where it gets controversial... Could Charlo's offer be a genuine attempt to revitalize his career, or is it a calculated move to capitalize on the uncertainty surrounding the Ennis vs. Ortiz fight?
What do you think? Will Charlo actually step into the ring with Ennis or Ortiz? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below! Do you think De La Hoya is truly acting in Ortiz's best interest, or is there more to the story? Let's discuss!
