Introducing Virginia’s shining star in baseball, Kyle Johnson, who is often compared to the renowned Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani stands out as a unique all-star, excelling both as a pitcher and designated hitter in Major League Baseball. In a similar vein, Virginia has found its very own version of Ohtani in Kyle Johnson, who seems perfectly suited for the role of a Cavalier.
Kyle Johnson is a versatile junior utility player who transferred from Duke University. This season, he is slated to shine as a left-handed pitcher while also hitting right-handed and playing in the right field. Following Coach Chris Pollard from Duke to Virginia this offseason, Johnson is expected to make significant contributions to the team. Pollard expressed his confidence in Johnson during the preseason media session, highlighting his remarkable evolution and dedication.
"Kyle Johnson has really made a name for himself this fall," Pollard stated. "I’m incredibly proud of his development, both physically and personally. The challenges he faced last year have only strengthened his resolve as a competitor."
Pollard’s faith in Johnson is underscored by the fact that he was appointed one of Virginia’s four team captains for the 2026 season—a notable achievement as he is the only captain who did not spend multiple seasons with the Cavaliers before receiving this honor.
This leadership role didn’t come easily, as Johnson faces a demanding weekly schedule. He explained that during the season, his routine consists of practicing pitching on Tuesdays, starting the first game of a weekend series on Fridays, and engaging in every other practice or game either as a designated hitter or in right field. Remarkably, Johnson is the sole player Pollard anticipates maintaining this rigorous routine while participating in the majority of games.
Despite his ability to play multiple positions, Pollard emphasizes that Johnson’s primary focus should be as the team's top pitcher.
"Johnson understands that his most significant impact on the team will be on the mound," Pollard noted. "However, he said to me, 'Coach, I realize this could be my last chance to swing a bat. If that’s the case, I want to maximize my contributions to help this team win while enjoying the experience.' Right now, he’s poised to get considerable at-bats for us."
While Johnson is new to the Virginia baseball scene, he is certainly familiar with Pollard and his coaching staff. They shared the past two seasons together at Duke, and both are optimistic that more great things lie ahead for this talented three-way player.
In his freshman year in 2024, Johnson achieved Freshman All-American honors, living up to the high expectations set for him as the No. 46 recruit nationally from the high school class of 2023. During that season, he played in 39 games, starting 34, and boasted a batting average of .253 along with an impressive combined on-base and slugging percentage of .878.
However, Johnson's sophomore year in 2025 proved to be more challenging. Although he participated in six more games than in his debut season, he secured six fewer starts, leading to a concerning increase in his earned run average, which rose to nearly 7.19. His batting average also declined, dropping from a respectable .253 to a less favorable .220.
In his final season at Duke, Johnson stepped up to fill in for the suspended AJ Gracia, a junior outfielder who has also since transferred to Virginia. During this time, Johnson managed to record four hits in the Durham Super Regional, a highlight in his season as he tried to step into Gracia's shoes.
"That was definitely a standout moment for me this season," Johnson remarked. "I wanted to make sure I did my part while AJ was out of the lineup."
Ultimately, Johnson's 2025 season concluded with Duke being ousted from the Durham Super Regional by underdog Murray State in the decisive game of a three-game series—just one win short of reaching the College World Series.
Remarkably, the day after Duke's season ended, Pollard was announced as the new head coach for the Cavaliers, taking over from Brian O’Connor, who had left for Mississippi State.
"The transition happened quite rapidly, but I genuinely believe both coaches are exceptional," Johnson reflected. "When Coach Pollard took the position here, many U.Va. supporters were just as thrilled as they were when O’Connor was in charge."
Following Pollard’s commitment to Virginia, Johnson eagerly joined him, along with five other players who made the leap from Duke to the Cavaliers. However, Johnson’s connection to the University of Virginia runs deeper than just his recent transfer; both of his parents and his older sister are alumni. Growing up in Leesburg, VA, he often traveled to watch Virginia baseball in action.
Now, in 2026, Johnson is completing his journey full circle, proudly wearing the V-Sabre as a key player in Pollard’s inaugural season. He is anticipated to take the spotlight as he starts on the mound for the season opener against Wagner on February 13.
As the team prepares for the beginning of the regular season, it is hard to overlook the legacy of postseason success that was central to Cavalier baseball under O’Connor's guidance. Pollard is committed to maintaining that tradition, and Johnson shares the same ambition.
"I genuinely believe this team has everything it needs to capture a national championship," Johnson asserted.
