Despite a phenomenal 2025 season, Geraldo Perdomo isn't resting on his laurels – he's driven to elevate his defense!
By all accounts, Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo had an absolutely stellar 2025 season. At just 26 years old, he didn't just have a good year; he had an outstanding one. He led all National League position players in bWAR (Wins Above Replacement) with an impressive 7.0. What's more, he demonstrated incredible plate discipline, walking 94 times compared to striking out only 83 times. His defensive prowess was also statistically recognized, ranking in the 87th percentile among all Major Leaguers with five outs above average. These remarkable achievements culminated in him finishing fourth in the National League MVP voting.
But here's where it gets interesting: despite all these accolades, Perdomo admits he wasn't entirely satisfied. "I wasn't happy with my defense," he confessed. When presented with his strong defensive metrics, he brushed them aside, stating, "I don't care about the numbers. I made a lot of mistakes that cost a couple of games in the season too, and that's all that matters to me."

Lovullo even recalled instances where Perdomo's glove wasn't properly broken in, leading to difficult conversations. "He's that good and he spoils us. I have all the faith in the world in him that he's going to be an elite defender for us this year."
Perdomo confirmed that defense was his primary focus throughout the offseason. He participated in winter ball, a yearly tradition to prepare for Spring Training, where he concentrated on playing "good, clean baseball on defense." His commitment is evident from the very first practice, with defense being his top priority.
And this is the part most people miss: Perdomo isn't just working in isolation. He's actively seeking wisdom from one of the game's greatest defenders, veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado. Acquired by the Diamondbacks in the offseason, Arenado boasts an incredible 10 Gold Gloves and six Platinum Gloves in his career. Perdomo is meticulously observing Arenado's daily defensive routines, aiming to emulate his consistent excellence. "I'm telling myself to be like him, to do what he did for 10 years in a row," Perdomo shared. "We talk all the time. He's such a great player, he has an amazing mentality and I have enjoyed every second with him so far."
